Internal Audit Manager

“Nationale-Nederlanden stands out for its openness to diverse perspectives .”

An Unexpected Journey

I stumbled upon Nationale-Nederlanden in 2008 during my fourth year of law studies while seeking to complete a mandatory internship. What I initially thought would be a one-month experience turned into a lasting career path. After fulfilling my internship hours, I felt at home within the company, and my team still needed assistance, so I stayed on to learn more about the insurance industry.
Combining legal tasks with compliance responsibilities was entirely new, as I was initially unaware of the field's specifics. However, being someone who firmly adheres to my moral compass, I quickly embraced the idea that ensuring ethical business practices should always consider the customer's perspective. When recruitment for the compliance team began, I was already passionate about the company and the role, so I seized the opportunity without hesitation, even though this path did not directly align with my formal education.

Career Transitions

After several fulfilling years in compliance, an offer from Nationale-Nederlanden 's internal audit team emerged during the final months of my maternity leave. The offer marked a significant shift from compliance but promised an opportunity to delve deeply into Nationale-Nederlanden 's processes and enhance client service quality—an aspect of my work that continues to bring me immense satisfaction. Embracing this new challenge as an internal auditor was a natural progression, supported by NN's commitment to nurturing its talent and allowing individuals to explore new roles within the organization.

Change and Growth

Now, nearly a year into my role as an audit manager, I find myself continually challenged to expand beyond my comfort zone. The transition has required a delicate balance between managing tasks and leading people—a dual responsibility that demands attention to detail and a strategic, long-term perspective. As I evolve from a technical expert to a managerial role, relinquishing control over minute details remains a learning curve.
At Nationale-Nederlanden, I have learned to create 'balcony moments,' where I step back to gain a broader perspective amidst daily whirlwinds.

Success Through Collaboration

What sets Nationale-Nederlanden apart for me is its openness to diverse perspectives and the genuine encouragement for all employees, regardless of tenure or experience, to contribute to discussions and decision-making processes. This inclusive culture has been pivotal in my growth journey within Nationale-Nederlanden, where my opinions and insights are valued. I've been fortunate to experience its supportive culture firsthand and am committed to passing it on to new team members so they can also feel empowered and valued from day one.
At Nationale-Nederlanden, success is not just an individual achievement, but a collective effort shared across teams. Collaboration is deeply ingrained in our processes, ensuring every step toward our goals is a joint endeavor. This spirit resonates strongly with me, as I've witnessed firsthand how shared victories are more fulfilling when celebrated with those who understand the journey. NN's emphasis on mutual success and cooperation makes it an ideal workplace for individuals who derive satisfaction from teamwork and collective achievement.
